MEET THE PARENTS

This was a project undertaken whilst taking part in Kingston University's 'Design for Innovation' module (a standalone part of their Master's programme).

Madeleine extensively researched the barriers to parents volunteering for the Parent Teacher Association (parent volunteers are always much needed to help at fund raising events etc). Her research involved a questionnaire sent to all parents, interviews with key stakeholders, the creation of personas to explore the identified barriers in more detail and observation at PTA meetings. She then used her findings to create a visual aid to help explain the type of jobs available to suit each level of commitment a parent was able to give.  The aid was used during the new parent introdution evening at the school.

Drawing on insights gained through a questionnaire and also by observations from being embedded within the school community (as a parent of children at the school), Madeleine was able to identify different levels of commitment to volunteering that parents were able to give.  She then designed a communication system around that criteria.

Madeleine also designed visuals explaining the different opportunities for volunteering at the school and piloted it at the school's welcome evening to new parents. Feedback from the parents was very positive.
